Sample text:

The development of psychology as a science has led to the scientific study of dreams.  This provides us with explanations as to why we dream and why we dream what we dream.

One of the earliest theories of why we dream came from Sigmund Freud. In his book The Interpretation of Dreams, he said dreams represent our repressed desires either through manifest content which refers to the actual things we see in our dream, or from the latent content or the hidden meanings of the things we see. Freud’s ideas encouraged modern Westerners to become interested in understanding and interpreting their dreams; but it wasn’t as pleasant as they expected it to be. For example, what used to be a simple dream about riding horses was interpreted as the repressed desire for the sex act.

One major comment against Freud’s theory of why we dream was that it focused too much on sexual interpretations. To understand psychoanalysis better, we must put it in the context of the Victorian era when it was developed. During that time, sexuality was repressed and all that had to do with it was considered unacceptable.
