First of all, let’s talk a bit about the concept of lucid dreaming – have you ever heard of it? Do you know what it is? If not, let me give you a little summary. Lucid dreaming is the act of entering a dream state while remaining entirely lucid. What this means is that while you are asleep and are, in fact, dreaming, you still retain control. Thus, you have the ability to decide where the dream will take you, what you do, where you are, who you talk to, etc. It’s like imagining, or daydreaming, only better.
The term was coined as early as 1913, and it has been used to define the concept ever since. Lucid dreaming starts as soon as you realize that you are dreaming. Usually, that happens when you notice something happening that cannot happen in real life, strange events, etc. Now, normally this is the moment when you wake up because you realize that you are dreaming. But when you train yourself to induce lucidity and retain it, you will be able to continue experiencing the dream while still being able to control it.
Something you have to keep in mind is that with lucid dreaming, you are always aware that you are dreaming, that you are sleeping in your bed and that you are completely safe. Thus, your dream can never turn into a frightening experience (like a nightmare), because you have the power of changing the situation in your favor. Of course, if you lose lucidity, you could slip into a nightmare, because you are no longer in control of your dream experience.
