There are a beast load of psychological, scientific explanations for lucid dreaming, but unless you're familiar with the topic, none of it will make sense, and even if you are, chances are that you'll disagree with a lot of it, so I'll summarize it in comprehendible terms.
Lucid dreaming isn't anything new, in fact it is believed that Ancient Buddhists actively practiced lucid dreaming as a form of "dream yoga". I personally can relate to this because to me, when I'm controlling my dreams, I feel like it's giving my brain a workout because of how difficult it is.
