Na Pali – the name of a Hawaiian island was also the name of the building that served as the Headquarters of Quiksilver in the city of Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the Southwest of France.
Surfboards and snowboards in the walls and ceilings decorated the building all made of wood, almost hidden by a forest of pines. The architect who designed it received an award of the best building in Europe for it. It had been designed to bring an environment of well-being that surfers could appreciate.
I was right in the middle of my 6-months trainee contract, a requirement for the conclusion of my MBA.
Man, I was living the dream!
Working at Quiksilver and the quality of life in the French Basque Country were unimaginable! Work was just a 5 minutes car ride away. I worked from 9:30 to 6 pm, in a 35-hour workweek with an hour and a half long lunch break when everyone took time to play some kind of sport. Some people would go for a run, others swam, skated, played soccer or if waves were good, most of us would pick our surfboards and just cross the street to go surf in Lafitenia, a beach endowed with the best waves of the region.
This day there was a party going on in the evening to present the new collection. The models paraded inside Agora, the large central hall that linked the various buildings of the headquarters.
A large screen inside Agora was showing the surf championship live from Fiji where Matt Wilkinson and Connor O’Leary were face to face in one of the best waves in the planet, and I was outside in that warm evening of June in Southwest of France, listening to Tom Curren playing a nice and easy surf music on his guitar.
For those who do not remember, Curren is a three-time world champion, a kind of a “Kelly Slater” of the late 80s.
