Life in hyperspace

Spraypainting the cat? What was he thinking??

With four year college degrees under our belts and a dab of training in Child Psychology, my wife and I thought we were ready for anything when it came to this parenting gig.

We had no idea we would be outnumbered and outgunned. From diet to riot, meds to charts, we've tried it all, to train up our ADHD kids in the way they should grow.

From the Home School of Hard Knocks, our four ADD and ADHD kids have taught us more about coping and planning ahead than any four year college degree could have, especially when it comes to understanding what goes on in the mind of a five year old in a Buzz Lightyear costume flying on a treadmill. To Infinity, and Beyond.

This is the chronicle of two adult ADD parents and their four ADD/ADHD kids living in a loving madhouse with four neurotic cats and a snow white bi-eyed monster dog that eats trees.Inside you will find more laughs and maybe some help and advice for what to do with the ADD kids in your own home, from someone who's Been There, Done That.

Only in Our Home…

“Honey, is clear-coat poisonous?”

I gripped the steering wheel. “What do you mean, is clear coat poisonous?”

“You left out the spray can when you were working on Justin’s Awana Grand Prix car.”

“And?”

“And, well, John spray-painted the cat.”

“He what??”

“Well, we were talking earlier about how the cat’s coat wasn’t shiny anymore. He was… just trying to fix it.”

I took a deep breath. “There probably wasn’t much left in the can. Bathe the cat and he should be fine.”

I hung up and gripped the steering wheel harder. Spray-painting the cat? What was he thinking?

A few minutes later the cellphone rang again.

“How far away are you?”

“About ten minutes. Why?”

“Do you want to meet us in the ER, or do you want us to wait on you?”

I blinked. “What happened?” Visions of cat scratches went through my mind.

“Rachel was looking for the DVD Player remote, and got her finger slammed in the van door.”

“What? She was looking for the remote in the van?”

“Right. And she’s almost cut her finger off.”

I swallowed. My head started swimming. Oh, my poor baby. “Were you able to stop the bleeding?”

Rachel’s shaky voice cut in. “It’s ok, Daddy. It didn’t bleed all that much.”

Justin’s voice came through the speaker. “We stopped the bleeding, Dad, but it’s pretty serious. You can see bone!”

The highway swam in front of me. “Justin, you know how I am about blood and such. I’m driving on the expressway!”

Author review:
Ana has worked closely with me on two projects. It is obvious she put a lot of work into the translations, and cared deeply about getting the translation right.

I've had her work examined in depth by a native Brazilian, who also does translations, and he was impressed by her work.

Author review:
Daniela was motivated by her interest and involvement in special needs, and was able to translate this work in record time. She didn't ask for any extension. The quality of her translation was remarkable given the rate of translation, and she was a joy to work with.

I'll be working with her again!
