Behaving with integrity (even when no one is looking) is the foundational element in being a great leader. Whether you are at the top or the bottom of the company totem pole, a character of integrity will always serve you in the long run.
A person of integrity does not accept bribes nor does he mix business with pleasure. There isn’t any need to go through a list of what’s right and wrong because we all already know. What separates those with integrity from those who lack this quality, is that the one with integrity will always choose what is right. Even if it is the more difficult decision. Even if it is a decision that will come with consequences (think Maximus in the movie Gladiator).
A leader’s word is always impeccable, you say what you mean and do what you say you will do. People feel they can trust you because that is the reputation you’ve built for yourself.
A leader does not engage in office gossip and instead will try to stop such destructive behaviors within the group.
As a leader, the worst thing that can happen to you is a loss of integrity because this is the very foundation of being a good leader. If you don’t have integrity and people feel that they can’t trust you then it will be difficult to influence or organize any group of people.
