The ketogenic diet is one of the low carb diets just like the Atkins and the South Beach diet. There is something unique about it though; it is very specific about the macronutrients in that with this diet, you should eat a lot of healthy fats (roughly 70 percent of your daily calorie intake), take a moderate amount of proteins (about 1g for every pound of weight or less but not less than 0.7g for every pound of weight to ensure your body does not start burning muscles for energy) and take very minimal amount of carbohydrates (less than 50grams net carbs – net carbs simply refers to total carbs minus fiber). And it is not just about eating a diet that is low in carb, high in good fat and moderate in protein; for it to be considered ketogenic diet, it must get you into a state of ketosis i.e. a state where the body burns body fat for energy (I’ll explain the process later), which in turn brings about weight loss.
