The first thing that this myth is wrong about is the assumption that cholesterol causes heart diseases. So why do people assume it causes heart diseases? My wild guess is that they confuse it with what really causes heart diseases i.e. triglycerides. Below is a simple explanation of how the two are related.
Cholesterol is normally vital for life. It helps your body produce bile acid (which you use for digestion), vitamin D, hormones and cell membranes. Cholesterol is usually needed all over your body. The only problem is that it cannot flow freely in your blood to travel in different parts of your body.
What it usually does is to combine with proteins and fats, which form lipoproteins called High-density lipoproteins (HDL) and Low-density lipoproteins (LDL). The two are the vehicles that carry cholesterol through your bloodstream.
Here’s the kicker, triglycerides also travel using the two aforementioned vehicles. Whenever triglycerides increase in your blood, the number of vehicles to transport them increases. On the other hand, whenever cholesterol levels increase, the size of vehicles increases to house the excess cholesterol.
