In its simplest terms, the ketogenic diet is simply any diet that gets you in ketosis. For you to get into ketosis without starving yourself, you must restrict how much of carbohydrates you eat to not more than 50g of carbohydrates and pair that with moderate intake of proteins and high intake of fats. This perhaps explains why the ketogenic diet is also referred to as a low carb high fat diet. From this definition, it means that while the ketogenic diet is a low carb diet (a low carb diet is any diet that recommends intake of not more than 25% of your calories from carbohydrates), it is unlike any other low carb diet in that it has a goal; to get dieters into ketosis – without ketosis, you cannot consider yourself as following the ketogenic diet.
