The Cyclical Ketogenic Diet is suited for athletes and those performing physically strenuous tasks. The CKD has a ‘carb up’ every few days; some individuals increase their carbohydrates in a cycle every three days, while others opt to do it on a five day cycle. The purpose of increasing carbohydrate intake in a cyclical pattern like this is to replenish glycogen levels.

The cyclical ketogenic diet allows the individual to completely deplete their muscle glycogen levels (the period this takes depends on the individual and the amount/intensity of exercise or training they are performing), however, this is generally around the seven day mark of being in a state of ketosis. Carbohydrates are then consumed in high amounts for a 24 – 48 hour period. Many athletes find the cyclical ketogenic diet convenient when using a seven day cycle as it allows carbohydrates to be consumed on the weekend (in other words, they can be a bit more relaxed with their diet and enjoy themselves).

During the 24 – 48 hour period of high carbohydrate consumption, unfortunately, the body is kicked out of the state of ketosis. The benefit, of course, is the individual will have replenished glycogen stores as they go back into their next week of low carbohydrate eating, allowing them to not suffer from fatigue as quickly, and allowing them to perform at a high intensity to the best of their abilities.
