There is a problem with this approach though; it promotes fat accumulation! If you thought fat makes you fat, think again; carbs are the ones that end up building your fat stores much more than fats! How is that so? Well, when you are on a high carb diet, any excess carbohydrates you might have (which is very common owing to the huge amounts of carbs that we take nowadays) are converted into glycogen and the excess (because glycogen stores are limited) converted into fatty acids and glycerol for storage in different parts of the body. It doesn’t start there though. When you eat carbohydrates, they are broken down in the digestive system then converted into sugar (glucose) by various enzymes before absorption into the bloodstream for transportation to different parts of the body where it is needed. Upon absorption, glucose triggers the pancreas to secrete insulin, as insulin is important in aiding the cells to absorb glucose from the bloodstream. Without insulin, the cells would starve to death and would even be damaged by the increased concentration of glucose in the bloodstream. As insulin concentration rises, the metabolism of various other macronutrients (fats and proteins) reduces (it does not stop though). When fat metabolism slows down, this means the body is unlikely to use up stored body fat because it already has its primary source of energy i.e. glucose. In fact, the opposite just happens
