“Go on, do it! Light her up!” Keith giggled. “Do it now.”
The girl was on her knees looking up at John through teary eyes. Her hair was soaking wet and covering most of her face. The smell of petrol was nauseating. John stared down at the girl. How old was she? Twenty? Twenty one, maybe.
She didn’t deserve to die so young.
He didn’t want to hurt her, but he was scared of what Keith would do to him if he didn’t.
“Please,” the girl cried, “I just want to go home.”
John didn’t say a word. He continued to stare into her soggy eyes. Keith’s giggling was beating inside his head like a drum.
“Do it. Do it. Do it!” Keith began to chant.
“Please,” the girl screamed.
“Do it now…before I do it to you,” Keith roared.
John lit a match and threw it into the girls face. The flames engulfed her instantly. They rose so high, John could feel the heat from the girl on his cheeks. The girl was now on her feet, running around in wobbly circles. The sounds of her screams pierced through John’s ears. Tears filled his eyes as he watched the giant flame running around the room.
He could smell her flesh already.
He turned to leave.
“No,” Keith demanded. “You…we watch.”
John carried on walking.
“John?”
He came back and hesitantly observed. He watched until the charred black remains of the once beautiful young girl lay motionless on the floor. He didn’t even know her name.
“Why?” John cried.
“Because that’s what I like to do.” Keith giggled again.
“But why do you make me do it?”
“Because I can, can’t I?” Keith shouted. “Come on. You’re late!”
