Jimmy shook his head visibly.  He had no business thinking of Shelly as anything but a good friend and business associate.  That’s all they were to each other, and it’s all they would ever be.

That night when he got home, he went to Trish’s room and knocked on the door.  He wasn’t sure if she was there as there was no light showing under the door nor was there any sound whatsoever.  At first, there was no sound, but after a few seconds, he heard a faint response.

“Jimmy, is that you?” Trish asked softly.

“Yes.  May I come in?” Jimmy asked, grateful to hear Trish’s voice.  He felt guilt wash over him as his mind flitted back to the thoughts he had about Shelly.  Those thoughts never should have crossed his mind.  He was a married man, and Shelly was a married woman.

“It’s open,” Trish said.

Inside it was dark, save for the glare of the laptop on the bed.

“You can turn on the light if you want to,” she said.

He obliged, longing to get a good look at her.  Too much time had passed since the last time they had spent any quality time together.

“Hey, how are you?” he asked, eyes pleading with her to reach out to him, to finally communicate with him as her husband.

“I’m…fine,” she replied with a sigh.

There was silence as he waited for her to continue.  Maybe if he gave her a moment to look at him, really look at him, she would remember how close they had once been.
