The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the oldest and most widely known index. Currently the Dow Jones only has 30 Stocks. However each of these stocks represent the most affluent companies in this country. The Dow is the only index that is price weighted. What that means is; if a stock price changes by $1 it has the same effect on the index regardless of the percentage change on a stock. So, if you have a $1 change for a $30 dollar stock it has the same $1 change on a $60 stock. The calculation of the Dow takes into account the split of stocks over the years. The adjusted math is what keeps the Dow index meaningful and historically viable. Dow stocks represent about 1 quarter of the value of the total market. It does not represent small and medium sized companies.
