Our lives are filled with habits. Many of these habits are subconscious and happen without us thinking about them. They can help us in our daily lives, such as waking at the same time each day, while others are conscious - brushing our teeth or walking the dog for instance. 

Habits are created when we learn how to do something new and then follow that same behavior many times thereafter. Driving a car is a good example, particularly if you drive a stick shift. Changing gear and braking become habitual and for the most part a subconscious act. Have you ever driven somewhere and then realized you remember nothing about the journey? I know I have.

Habits that work on a subconscious level aren't always good. Smoking and nail-biting for example can become so ingrained that we don't even realize we're doing them. Because of this, these subconscious behaviors are more difficult to break than some of the conscious ones, such as always stopping to buy a bar of chocolate on the way home from work each day or checking your social media feed every time your phone rings.

If you want to break a bad habit, the best time to do it is when you have a change of environment. This could be when you go on holiday, move house or change jobs for example. Being taken out of your familiar everyday surroundings can maximize your chances of breaking even the most ingrained subconscious habits
