The ape-like humanoids paid their respects to the totem by touching with it their right hands and lowering their heads. There were three of them just as I had expected. Their faces were hidden behind some kind of helmet or burgonet. Their bodies were bulky, muscular and athletic, but there was an innate clumsiness to their movements. Their hands were large and sturdy, their legs strong but slender. They didn’t know they were being watched from above.
There were three of them, one of them being slightly shorter than the others. None of them appeared to be in charge, they were probably equals within their society. One of them took out a piece of shining glass from a pouch on his belt and introduced it into the Idol’s missing eye.
The earth shook as if it had been hit by a small earthquake, making the birds in the nearby trees abandon the area. I held tight to the tree branches and witnessed as the statue slid sideways, revealing the entrance to a subterranean passage.
The three of them went down the stairs into their lair. The earth shook once again, only slower this time, as the idol concealed the secret entrance to their underground hideout.
Who were they? Why did they live underground? What was down there? The answers to those questions could wait. I needed to focus on finding Mia before dusk.
I climbed down the tree and examined the idol. The bright transparent glass sphere remained inserted into the eye socket. My curiosity got the better of me and I pressed on it. The idol slid sideways once again to reveal an opening to the underground passageway. There was no light inside. I took out the flare I had gotten from the airplane and climbed down the steep stairway, leaving the entrance open just in case I needed to escape in a hurry.
