Chapter Two

Tumbling rock debris broke the dead silence. Instinctively Blake shifted the high-powered binoculars toward the abutting mountain. It was nothing, just a numbing wind passing through.

He lay prone inside the camouflage tent and peered through the slit, panning the lenses back to the decrepit cottage some 3,500 feet below the Balkans’ snowy, mountainous terrain. Based on investigations, the Deringer that actor John Wilkes Booth used to kill Abraham Lincoln would be found there. Not in the cottage, but what it concealed beneath—a secret underground vault.

The Philadelphia Deringer had historic value. Abraham Lincoln was shot with it on April 14, 1865 at approximately 10:15 p.m., five days after General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant. John Wilkes Booth infiltrated the theater box where the president and his wife were watching a play and shot Lincoln in the back of the head.

HSI, which has a department dedicated to tracking down stolen artifacts and antiquities, was cooperating with the FBI’s investigation to recover the stolen item.
