A long ten hour shift at the hospital had Becky Watkins-Simms ragging ass as she parked and walked to the mailbox at roadside to collect today’s delivery of junk mail and bills. Glancing through envelopes walking to the porch mentally sorting so she could toss trash in the can by the door, she would place invoices in the drawer to be paid. A strange envelope snagged her attention.
Hair on the back of her neck stood, and foreboding oozed in as she reached the house. Instead of entering, she sat on the swing and slit it open with a short cropped nail.
Damn, the paper cut hurt.
Peeling thick stationary from inside, she unfolded it and closed her eyes tilting her chin slightly asking for heaven’s grace. Forcing her focus to the page she read the short notice deliberately, absorbing every word’s meaning. It wasn’t easy the way her hand trembled.
Finally able to take a normal breath it seeped out as a loud sigh. She managed a couple robust gulps before convinced she wouldn’t hyperventilate. The hollow in her gut wasn’t from hunger, though she had been famished a few minutes earlier.
It didn’t matter. Like always, Becky must move forward balancing whatever bullets life threw her way without hesitation or dropping the ball. Too much at stake. She blinked twice, stood pushing her shoulders back and forced her head high as she shoved the offending note into a sweater pocket. No time for a pity party or worrying about implications.
Becky dragged herself into the house. “I’m home.”
A four-foot munchkin rushed at her with arms wide. She scooped Evan into a bear hug and spun him around with a genuine grin on her face. “What has my little man been up to today?” She settled the tot onto his feet, and taking his hand led him toward the kitchen.
