Finding freedom

Katie was born into a cult. Her family lived there for generations. As she got older, she realized the Elders were keeping secrets from the community. Risking everything, she leaves the cult and searches for the truth. With the help of outsiders, Katie and her young husband David are put in touch with an organization called Purple Haven, which provides medical care, shelter, counseling and job training to individuals who have escaped from cults. She soon discovers she’s pregnant. With the help of her husband, her therapist, and two friends, Katie learns what it means to have a relationship with God.

As a girl, Katie Martin came from a perfect community. That’s what everyone thought, at least. Her parents were both strong in their faith, and they lived in a very tightly knit Christian community in Oregon, known as “Zion.” The entire community was made up of only 200 people. To an outsider looking in, it seemed almost magical, like something one would see in a Hallmark movie. Each dwelling was made up of two stories, with a front porch and was scattered along the winding dirt roads of their farmland community. Trees covered both sides of the dirt road that Katie’s dwelling laid on. It was peaceful, quiet. She could see her friend Patty’s dwelling from her front porch and would often sit out there on her white painted wooden porch swing, with her black leather bound Bible in her lap, gazing off into the distance and feeling her heart call out, but to what, she was unsure. She always felt closer to God when she was outside.

Katie slowly realized, however, that the peacefulness of this community would not put a stop to her wandering heart. She knew that her brethren had a strong desire to “live peaceably with all men” as the Deacon had taught, as did she, but the rest of it? It was all a game. A game that was played extremely well. Many others that lived within their community, and even her own family members, couldn’t see the pain she kept hidden. There was an anger that welled up inside of her like a monster she struggled to control. For the longest time, she had no idea why she had these feelings. It was as if the other younglings didn’t see the monsters that lurked in the shadows. Or maybe it was all in Katie’s mind.
