Fate of a Witch by Miranda Bailey

A solitary witch who doesn't need anyone suddenly has a human to care for. And an enemy that wants to destroy them both.

Fate of a witch

I don’t need anyone. Not friends. Not lovers. Definitely not a human man who lands in the middle of the forest, bleeding all over the place. Fate and the Cynulliad taught me long ago not to rely on anyone but myself. Ties to others only bring heartache and worse.

So, why did I drag Will Addair to my house and break the oldest rule in my world? Humans are forbidden. And I’m the last person that should be breaking rules.

Will is everything I shouldn’t want. He’s far too curious, stubborn about what he thinks he knows, and what I should know, and far too easy on the eyes. Well, my eyes, that is. The man is dangerous. To me, to my life, to the fact that I have hid in these woods for years without trouble, until he came along and started all but pointing neon signs at my house with his antics.

Keeping him alive means risking all of that. But the Cynulliad are closing in, determined to destroy us both. Forced into uneasy trust, we have to find common ground to survive my enchanted home, the enemies outside it, and the fire sparking between us.

I was a witch who swore off love. He’s the human who tempts fate a little too much. Can we rewrite fate? Or will we burn instead?

Chapter One

Life isn’t easy when you’re a solitary witch. You get branded as being a loner and what happens to loners in Gwynfawr?  We get hunted.

That’s why I’m walking through the forest as stealthily as I can, pulling invisibility magic around me like my life depends on it. Because it does.

I followed the narrow game trail that wound between ancient oak trees and flowering dogwoods, my fingers occasionally brushing against rough bark as I passed. I wouldn’t be out here if I didn’t need to be but I’m out of the herb that makes sleep come easily and, well, when you live in the shadows you sometimes need help getting to sleep. I smothered a squeal of delight when I found a handful of rare mushrooms that would add a particular kick to my protection spells. I picked the mushrooms and continued to look around for a few more ingredients. I was ready to get back to my cottage and the safety I had there, but I need one or two more herbs to make my sleeping potion effective.
