A Handbook

History oy Europe since the French Revolution

European history 1815-2025

Modern European History 1815–2025: A Handbook is designed as a clear and dependable guide for students who want to prepare with confidence and clarity. Organised strictly around the prescribed syllabus, it allows readers to move step by step through the major themes of modern Europe without losing direction. The book begins with the transformative impact of the French Revolution and the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, then traces the settlement shaped by the Concert of Europe. From there, it explores the powerful forces that defined the nineteenth century, nationalism, liberalism, socialism, industrialisation, and empire, before turning to the Eastern Question, the unifications of Italy and Germany, and the road to the First World War.

The narrative continues through the turmoil of the interwar years, the rise of totalitarian regimes, the devastation of the Second World War, and the long shadow of the Cold War. It follows Europe’s post-war reconstruction, the creation of international institutions, the collapse of the Soviet Union, German reunification, European integration, and the shifting political currents of the twenty-first century. Throughout, the emphasis goes beyond dates and events. Background explanations and focused annexures help readers understand causes, connections, and consequences. Concise chapters, clear headings, and exam-oriented discussions make this handbook both a reliable primary text and a practical revision companion, while encouraging students to read further and think critically about how Europe’s past continues to shape its present.

This book began with a straightforward request. A student preparing for the Central Superior Services examination asked me to recommend a reliable guide to European history—one that was aligned with the CSS syllabus and did not overwhelm him with unnecessary detail. That request stayed with me. Although many books on European history are available, very few are written with the Federal Public Service Commission’s outline clearly in view. This handbook is my response to that gap.

The purpose of this work is simple: to provide a clear, focused, and syllabus-based guide that helps students prepare with confidence. Every major theme has been arranged according to the prescribed outline so that readers can move step by step without confusion. At the same time, I have tried to go beyond bare facts. Explanations, background discussions, and carefully placed annexures highlight the deeper forces at work. Dates and events matter, but understanding causes, connections, and consequences matters even more.
