Billy and Annie were on a school trip with their classmates. Their teacher, Mr. Johnson, had arranged for them to stay in an old hotel by the sea in the north of England. The hotel was famous for its history—it was over 200 years old—but some people said it was haunted.
When they arrived, the students were assigned their rooms. Billy and Annie were best friends and so they wanted to share a room. They were given Room 13.
“Room 13?” Billy said, looking at the key. “Isn’t that an unlucky number?”
“Don’t be silly, Billy,” Annie laughed. “That’s just a superstition.”
Their friend George joined in, “I heard Room 13 in this hotel is really haunted!”
“Stop teasing, George,” Annie said, shaking her head.
That night, after dinner, they all went to their rooms. Billy and Annie were both excited but a little nervous about staying in Room 13.
Billy opened the door, and they stepped inside. The room was old but clean. The wind howled outside, and the wooden floor creaked.
