Chapter 1
Nighttime came early despite it being summer. An eerie quiet had settled over Hollyport, a small town in northern Idaho, nestled against Lake Ono Pala. The gentle, rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the piers in Dockside, the fish market side of town, the soft chirping of birds in their carefully made nests in the parks, the gentle breeze prickling the tops of freshly mowed lawns and rustling the lush green leaves on the trees were the only sounds in the night air. Suddenly, without warning, there was a loud boom! It sounded like an explosion and it rattled adjacent building windows, setting off car alarms all along the street. The source most certainly emanated from within a building as there was a loud, yet muffled rumbling. It sounded like thunder, only thunder does not occur indoors.
Gary, the lone guard on duty in the town's largest bank, Hollyport Sovereignty, woke from his nap with a start. He tripped over his untied shoes and fell to the floor. As he stood up, the ground trembled violently, threatening to topple him onto the floor again.
