Russell Lyons stared at the odd bartender. She had hardly spoken a word to him all night, but she kept the poison coming without a nudge. It was a fine arrangement up to that point.
Russell's eye swept the bar. He was the only customer left in the dive. The last survivor of happy hour. The career barflies had already crawled out the door. So that crazy question had indeed come in his direction. She confused him. He didn't know whether to check his ass or scratch his watch. Russell wondered why he was still nursing a drink and wounds at this place. There were pieces of his life to reconstruct.
"Come again?" he asked.
The blonde bartender smiled. She was about Russell's age. Just shy of forty. She was curvy and thick. Her hairstyle reminded him of Farrah from that famous swimsuit poster. She had a farm girl's face that had sweated most of her makeup away, but she didn't need much to begin with. Her brown eyes were sweet and playful. There was a large streak of good-natured mischief in them.
Russell saw chewing gum paused between her teeth. She perched her arms on the bar and posed the question again.
"Could you love something so hideous and offensive that it made you ill to look at it?"
