Deciding on a new puppy is a big decision, but once you have decided on a puppy, its time to take your new furry friend home. When this happens, it’s important to start implementing the rules of house training right away. Your puppy probably won’t catch on to house breaking for several weeks, but if you start letting certain habits develop early on, and then try to change them later on, it can be confusing for a young dog.
When you bring your new dog into your home, remember that they will likely be nervous about their new surroundings, and since puppy’s muscles are not fully developed, this excitement can lead to frequent accidents.[1] Be patient, and don’t scold your puppy if they go to the bathroom inside the second you bring them home. Just ignore the accident, take them outside right away and if they go to the bathroom outside the home, reward them. Then come back in and calmly clean up their accident.
During your first few days at home, you should never leave you puppy alone or in the house unattended. Most puppies don’t even know that going to the bathroom inside the home is a mistake, let alone have the capacity to hold in their urine. No matter how old your puppy is, potty training should start right away. However, many dog behavior experts find that puppies between the ages of 8-12 weeks old are the easiest to train.
