The “stay” command is one of your puppy’s lifesaver techniques and builds on the “sit” command. This command requires your puppy to remain seated in a designated area for a given time, thereby helping him escape imminent danger. Your puppy may take long to master this command since it involves contravening his natural tendencies. Teaching “stay” involves the following steps:
1. While in a familiar environment, command your puppy to sit. Stand in front of him. If he remains in that position for two seconds, praise and treat him.
Repeat this exercise severally and vary the duration taken to reward him. Your reward releases your puppy from the desired position. You may begin increasing the length of time to three seconds, ten seconds, thirty seconds, or one minute, and so forth. Whenever, he breaks out of that position, just say a firm “no” and resume the exercise without rewarding.
2. After a few successful attempts, add a verbal cue and a hand signal. Just command your puppy to sit and stand directly in front of him. As soon as he sits, stretch your hand forward and open your palm saying, “Stay.” Then take a step backwards and wait for a few seconds; if your puppy remains in the same position, return to him, reward and praise him. If not successful, consider taking a shorter time, like a second, before rewarding him.
