The word “Stay!” is only said once. Nobody likes to be nagged.
Once your dog is staying for about 30 seconds try taking a step or two backwards. You are increasing the distance between the two of you. When you work on distance lower the amount of time you require him to stay.
When he gets the hang of long stays and distance stays you can start putting them together.
Keep your dog excited about training and let him earn lots of rewards. One way of keeping his interest is to mix things up. For example when teaching him to stay reward him for both long stays and shorter stays. Keep him guessing.
