If you’re planning on taking your dog for walks as its primary energy burner, which I don’t recommend here, then don’t have too higher standards initially. Expect low standards and your dog can only please you. When I say I don’t recommend walking as a primary source of exercise, that doesn’t mean I’m saying don’t do it. Do. There are just better ways to stimulate your dog mentally and physically. But you’ll want to mix walks in there anyway as exploration is one of the greatest pleasures for our canine friends.
Imagine being in your puppies situation when you’re hooking a leash around its neck. What would you think? I can tell you a puppies mind will immediately jump to ‘toy’. If your pet is biting and tugging at its leash, don’t fret. Don’t panic. And especially, don’t punish. The time will come for us to teach them how to behave appropriately when we’re off on an exploration.
You also cannot expect your puppy to refrain from barking. A walk contains an abundance of stimulants that are going to continually distract your dog. They won’t be able to decide what to look at next. And barking is a natural way for your pet to instinctively interact with his environment. Again, we don’t punish our dog for performing unwanted behavior. Until we show them how to behave, we can’t expect them to know.
