Do not give verbal commands until behaviors are well established. Ex: your dog always sits before being fed, then and ONLY then do you use the word “sit” at that moment to tie it all together. People expect communication primarily through speech. For dogs, the strongest sense is smell (which overrides anything they hear or see many times), followed by sight, and last comes hearing. Therefore, if your dog is watching you, then it can't be focusing on much else (and if you happen to be holding high value treats used only for rewarding behavior, you now have the two top senses covered).
For this to work, you must be consistent. If you are in a hurry or don't have time, do not ask for a behavior or show a potential reward, and then not wait until the entire process is complete. The key to success is for the dog to know that there are no other alternatives; that this is how it works. If you have no time to work on it, wait for it, or follow through simply ignore any behavior you dislike, and deal with it another time. The dog does not understand opposites (that the opposite of sitting is standing and barking and jumping).
