Dogs are social kinds of animals just like humans and they work the best when they are in a pack that has some well-defined hierarchy. They are a lot like a wolf pack and each of the animals will have their own place in the social order of the pack. If there is not a leader in the pack, you will find that the pack is all confused and there is going to be a lot of conflict. When you have one dog or many dogs, you need to have someone who is the leader. If you are bringing home a new dog, you need to become the leader because it is natural for the dog to have this leader; if you do not become the leader the dog is going to become the leader and then you have a lot of issues in your home.
The dog pack is going to start out with one alpha male as well as an alpha female. There is going to be someone who is in the pack under the alpha in case something happens to them and this becomes the beta. The lowest person of the whole pack is going to be the omega. In some cases this will be the whole pack and there is no one else. In other cases, there will be more dogs in the pack and so the other members will fall somewhere in between the top alpha and the lowest omega.
