I dreamt of ghosts and rain Sunday night, but the equally precognitive Monday morning weather report promised clear skies and bright stars for that October night in 1962, when I drove from Tallahassee to Marianna to tow home John’s ailing Jeep. The storm hit while we were stopped at a café for dinner. The lights dimmed down twice before the power went out.
“Demon rain,” our waitress said when we paid the bill and stepped from one darkness into another. We were cold soaked before we got to my car.
“Randy, what else can possibly go wrong?” asked John.
I was too busy driving blind to respond. John didn’t believe in ghosts, demon rain, or fate, so he seldom saw the relationship between a jinx question and its consequences. Looking back with the 20/20 hindsight of half a century, now that those who lost us in the rain have died or forgotten, I can safely tell you how John’s question was answered when we were conjured across the Chipola River on the haunted Bellamy Bridge.
In the car’s headlights, the east-bound road was little more than a hallucination beneath the frenetic dance of water and wind. Misshapen tatters of mist flickered in and out of view like bed sheets ripped from clotheslines. The misty remnants snapped, crackled and whispered, or perhaps I was hearing the ghost from my dreams.
