Sample text:

She didn’t feel ready at all. Heather would never choose to go into a meeting unprepared like this. At least she knew all the players by sight from the team. She watched every game and read every article put out about them. Would that be enough to work on?

Still feeling off-kilter, she followed Mrs. Westbrook into the conference room where four men waited for them. In addition to the club owner, Mr. Hooper, she recognized the GM and the team manager. The last guy made her catch her breath.

Every nerve in her body fired a red alert. She grasped the chair in front of her and held on as her knees went weak. After all the years of secretly watching his career, Ryan Daniels stood on the opposite side of the table. Ryan Daniels—tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome. How could he be the one mixed up in a baby scandal? She didn’t want him to be the one accused of that sort of thing.

His eyes took her in, making her warm all over. Time had been good to him, as had his rising baseball career. He had filled out in all the right places. His skin was that smooth brown she remembered so well, and his eyes—a honeyed amber—fascinated her.

“Mr. Hooper, this is Heather Jones, one of our best PR reps. Heather, this is the Athletic’s GM, Matt Browning, the manager Ben Simpson, and shortstop Ryan Daniels.” Mrs. Westbrook introduced everyone and then took a seat.

“It’s been a long time,” Ryan directed the comment to Heather. His voice sent another thrill through her body.

“Yes, it has.” Heather quickly sat down, clasped her hands under the table, and tried to pull herself together. She knew she liked him, but she never expected to feel such a physical connection from across a conference table.

She should have known. He had made her feel this way in high school. She’d simply forgotten over the years.
