J.R. walked the aisles of the store admiring the belt buckles. One in particular caught his eye: it was dull silver and featured a man riding a wild stallion. It reminded him of the matching rodeo buckles he and Wyatt wore.

After their last encounter on the moonlit mesa, Wyatt had disappeared.

J.R. returned to their meeting spot every night for a month. He would lay under the stars by the firelight and dream about their last encounter. He could still feel Wyatt’s rough hands on his skin and the way his muscular body collapsed on top of him in exhaustion after a night of lovemaking.

For the first time in their lives, they had felt truly free. But Wyatt was gone and those empty plains haunted him now.

He picked up the buckle and examined it closer: the cowboys face was hidden by his hat, one hand swung free above his head, the other gripped the reins. There was something about the image that lit a fire in him: he had to find Wyatt.

He asked around, but few people seemed to even know who Wyatt was. Finally, he ran into an old cowboy that worked the rodeo circuit.

He claimed Wyatt had run off with a traveling rodeo that played small venues. It was a rough outfit according to the old man, many of the cowboys had done time or were on the run from the law. Or in Wyatt’s case just on the run, J.R. thought.
