The lessons to be learned from Buddhism are too numerous to cover sufficiently in a single chapter of a single book. Each instruction of each sutra could have a full book written on it. So, rather than try to provide you with every little detail of each Buddhist scripture, this chapter will give you an introductory overview of some of the core principles that are important to the Buddhist philosophy. If you want to learn more than what is written here, you can turn to the actual Buddhist texts (which will be discussed more in the conclusion of this book).
The Four Noble Truths
Many consider these four concepts to be the central doctrine of the Buddhist philosophy. Together, they act as a sort of basic framework for the beliefs and philosophy. They are:
1. Dukkha: most commonly translated as “suffering” or “unhappiness.” Suffering is a truth of existence.
2. Samudaya Sacca: samudaya is usually translated as “origin” or “source” while “sacca” means truth. This refers to the true causes of suffering (desire and ignorance).
3. Nirodha Sacca: nirodha means cessation or extinction. This is the truth that suffering (or, Dukkha) can be permanently eliminated.
