Nothing could be further from the truth. Unfortunately, these “needs” are created by the commercialization of a belief system which is grounded on detachment to worldly pleasures. The portrayal of popular media has glamorized religious practices and beliefs which are supposed to be very basic and simple.
Just like in any other belief system, there are Buddhist practitioners who will find ways to benefit from followers who will believe anything. They are the ones who use Buddhism to earn profit. They use people’s trust and faith in order for personal gain.
Keep in mind that Buddhist leaders and teachers are still people. Sometimes, people do stupid things. Nobody is perfect, and Buddhists are not claiming to be. If you want to practice Buddhism, you still need to be mindful of your own choices. It is dangerous to blindly follow whatever religious leaders say. In the end, what you do is still your own choice and you have every right to choose to ignore whatever makes you feel uncomfortable.
