If you want to really get to know someone put them at ease. Many of us walk around with walls up in the day to day life. Some people are more guarded than others. If you are dealing with someone who is very closed encourage them to let that tension drop by giving them space. Allow them to come to you. Observe them and meet them where they are at. In other words, meet them on their level or wavelength and let them set the tone. This is a way of giving someone space to be themselves. Putting others at ease is an art. It’s not easy but it’s a skill that you can develop over time if you are not already good at it.
Empathy plays a big role in your success. People have varying degrees of empathy, and a small percentage of the population is not able to feel it at all. One easy way to test your own empathy is by watching a movie. Do you start feeling the emotions along with the characters? When someone starts to cry, do you well up also? If so, you have pretty good empathy. If not, you can start to practice feeling for others and develop it more for yourself. Having empathy makes reading people much easier.
