When I was in high school, I was always looking for ways to get a stronger upper body. I was never much into the gym culture and lifting weights – it just seemed too unnatural to do for whatever reason - but regardless, strength was something I was always interested in. Perhaps that was because I am naturally small boned and skinny – something that may come of a surprise to people who look at me today and claim I’ve been going to the gym to develop my shoulders.

Strange, isn’t it – a guy who has NEVER trained in a commercial gym gets told he looks like he trains in one by some of the steroid guzzling meatheads that do train there – that in itself should tell you how effective the exercises I teach are.

Anyway, fast forward a few years later, and I was doing pushups and pull ups on an almost daily basis to build myself. I’d make it a point to do at least 250 pushups a day if not more. And this routine worked well for me – I had a flat stomach, strong chest, and my shoulders (while not exactly bursting out of my shirts weren’t exactly weak either).Combine that with climbing a hill daily during my stay in China, running subway stairs every chance I got, and I was pretty fit to be honest.

But, there was ONE thing I didn’t have at that point – and wanted – and that was a pair of powerful, huge and meaty shoulders that screamed “look out” to all and sundry. Let’s face it, the shoulders are a body part that is impossible to hide or disguise – and strong, wide shoulders are an unmistakable sign of strength, virility and manliness that almost all men crave.

Then one day, I remembered a balmy day in in New Orleans, when I was visiting the French Quarter with my (then) girlfriend. We nosed around a bit, had a good time, a few beers, and finally settled on watching a roadside show with a few entertainers from the West Indies (I think).
