WHO (2017) reported an estimated 300 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with some form of depression, which does not even cover the individuals who have not sought help (WHO, 2017). The number of people suffering from some form of anxiety was found to be similar to the population with the depression because both diseases often exist simultaneously (comorbidity) in the same person (WHO, 2017). In documented cases of depression and anxiety, 60 percent of individuals diagnosed with depression have symptoms of anxiety and vice versa (Salcedo, 2018).

Although nobody knows for sure why depression and anxiety tend to exist together, researchers have several viable theories. A popular theory has to do with chronic stress (University of Western Ontario, 2010). We have all been stressed, sometimes for a long time. But did you know the stress response was only meant to get us through a short-term tense situation, rather than be a way of life? Being under stress for prolonged periods of time can lead to anxiety, which can burn out key neurotransmitters (namely serotonin). If your brain lacks the “feel good” chemicals, then you will feel down and irritable. Long term stress can also burn out your adrenal glands, which can cause low energy and a lack of motivation.
