In this situation, anxiety would indeed be helpful because you would be put on alert. The classic "fight or flight" response equips us to react. This response is managed by the sympathetic nervous system that marshals the resources of the body in an appropriate response to the threat. The adrenal gland releases the hormone adrenaline stimulating the heart, causing blood vessels to contract, dilating air passage ways, increasing respiration rate, and increasing blood flow to the muscles. What a marvelously tuned process for this type of situation!


 

Once the threat is over, the parasympathetic nervous system resumes its work of regulating the body and brings us back to our normal state. However, adrenaline is still in our system and so it takes 15 to 20 minutes for all vitals to return to normal.
