Undoubtedly, daily exercise wins 80% of your battle with anxiety. But it doesn’t have to be painful or miserable like doing 100 sit-ups, running on the treadmill for an hour and so on. Exercise shouldn’t feel like work at all; it can be play. As a long as it gets your heart racing, makes you to sweat and is legitimately fun for you and your buddies, this is good enough. You don’t have to measure your heart rate, track your time or even count calories. Forget all that noise. Just focus on moving around with your friends while having fun.
In my experience, I find outdoor sports being the best form of anxiety reducing play. They’re usually more social (since more than one person is needed), mildly competitive, and guarantees that you’ll break a sweat in the cool fresh air and sunshine. However, feel free to do any form of indoor or outdoor physical activity that is playful and fun. Hitting golf balls and taking batting practice works wonders for me. Moreover, integrating play in my weekly routine really helped me reduce my anxiety more than anything else especially because enjoying guilt-free fun with my friends was quite a relief.
By playing, I was able to unplug from work and decompress and be more productive. Every time I got back to my laptop after a good play, I felt light and happy. I produced better work at a faster pace. Because my brain was recharged, happy and playful, it started operating at its best.
