Even the most confident people have had moments wherein they doubted their ability, or even their worth. For those who are less confident, frequent doubts and fears can be paralyzing in the sense that such things can drain them of their emotional energy and thus prevent them from living normal lives.
Suppressing or fighting off the anxious thoughts can be difficult for some of us, and ignoring them won’t do any good, either, as they are likely to come back later and cause us to worry all over again. The solution is to merely set aside enough time every day for worrying.
Set a specific time and place every day for you to worry about whatever is bothering you. For instance, from 5PM to 5:20PM each day, you can turn your living room into a “worry venue.” Any time of day will do, but for best results, your worry period should not be too late in the day that it causes you to feel anxious just as you are about to go to sleep.
If a thought that causes you to worry comes to you earlier in the day, write it down on a small piece of paper and make a note to remember about it when it’s time for your worry period.
Doing all your worrying at the same time each day allows you to devote the rest of your day to more important activities like work, errands, and household chores. It may seem silly having to write your anxious thoughts down on paper and then putting them aside for later. However, this practice teaches us that we can choose not to think about certain things during those times when we should be focused on doing something more productive. And as you get the hang of “worry postponement,” you could shorten your daily worry period as time goes by.
Furthermore, writing down your anxious thoughts on small pieces of paper forces you to use as few words as possible and thus have even less to think about during your worry period.
