Genre: FICTION / CrimeONE
Hannah Darby had awoken to sounds of a creaking cupboard door out in the kitchen. Jax, her faithful sleep companion stretched out to his full length. The back claws of the animal were exposed momentarily until they retracted. He yawned baring large upper canines before closing his mouth.
She knelt down on the floor beside her bed. Face to face with the feline, Jax squinted, closing his blue eyes and he purred loudly. Hannah ran her hand back and forth over his fur before stopping at the animal’s neck to scratch it. The smell of strong coffee drifted down the hallway and into her room. Nana Bug, as Hannah liked to call her grandmother, was up early on a Saturday morning.
She walked down to the kitchen with Jax at her heels. June Darby was staring out the window sipping from her favorite mug. “Morning Nana Bug.”
“Well, good morning kiddo. I see you dragged the cat in.”
Hannah stopped to check behind her. Jax curled his tail around her ankle. “Isn’t that supposed to be the other way around?”
“Not in his case.”
“Oh Nana, are you ever gonna love Jax?”
“He’s all yours, sweetie.”
“Mom says your hopeless when it comes to him.”
June Darby chuckled. “She did?”
