Colt Coleman stood alone in front of the grading board for English Literature, with his eyes tightly shut. In his hand he clutched a letter from his parents that he had just received that morning. What his eyes would view would determine how quickly he would open the letter. At twenty-five, he wasn’t the traditional college student. After high school he floundered through a couple of low paying, dead end stints until a smooth talking Marine recruiter convinced him he could be one of the few good men the Marines were looking for. It all sounded grand. A paycheck, retirement and a college education on Uncle Sam. His parents weren’t as enthused at the prospect, but never-the-less agreed he should give it a shot.
Basic training was the toughest weeks of his life and he had many moments of doubting his choice, wanting to quit. But Marines don’t quit, at least that’s what was drilled into him.
Finally, graduation day came and in front of his parents, family and friends, he proudly marched to the podium to receive his certificate. Two days later, he was on his way to the USS Eisenhower, stationed off the coast of Libya. Two days after getting his sea legs, he found himself in the middle of the Libyan desert. A clandestine operation designed to take out Kaddafi’s approaching tanks. Get in, take them out and get back out without anyone knowing they had ever been there, was the goal of the mission. Camouflaged in desert tones, Colt’s hands shook as he gripped the rocket propelled grenade launcher, loaded with armor piercing tank killers. The rumble of the approaching tanks could be felt in the burning sands searing his boots. His breathing became unsteady as the distant shimmers of the tanks appeared as a mirage. The sounds of the roaring diesels echoed across the dunes.
