The light of the Moon bathed and caressed the desert floor like an ocean as it had done for eons. The moonlight covering the soft ground cooled it ready for the heat of the next day. The sand that always seemed to cleanse itself of the armies that had come to fight over this region throughout history who had then in turn fought, bled and died only to have their bones and detritus of war buried and reclaimed by the earth as though swallowed by some devouring beast that lurked unseen beneath the sand.
Tonight was another such night of battle being fought by warring armies as those soldiers before that had stretched back through the mists of time had done like Cambyses himself who vanished with his army en route to the Oasis of Siwa and destroy the Temple of Amun but disappeared in a sandstorm. Only the means of transport and the weapons had changed. The sound of the Blackhawks in formation carrying their warriors grew in the still night air. As the helicopters gradually descended the rotor blades whipped up clouds of sand before the soldiers left the safety of their Blackhawks. This night would not be the last night that Death’s shadow crossed this ancient land and made its presence known....
