Genre: FICTION / Romance / RegencyJoan Wolf is one of our top three bestselling authors. The Heiress sold hundreds of copies in its first few months of sales and it had been previously published.
It was the first anniversary of my husband’s death, and I was spending it with his grandmother, the Duchess of Retford. Charles had been buried at the family seat, Retford Castle, and the two of us had visited his grave earlier in the day. We sat now in the castle’s chilly drawing room drinking tea.
“The Season will be starting in a few weeks,” the duchess said. “I am planning to open Retford House this year and attend some events.”
I lowered my cup of tea and stared at her. “You haven’t been in London for the Season in years. Why decide to go this year?”
She took a sip of tea, looked at me over the cup, and then said, “I am going because I want you to come with me. Your year of mourning is almost up, and it’s time you returned to society.”
I had been thinking of going to London myself, but not because I had any interest in returning to society. “Ah,” I said, and took a sip of my own tea.
“You need to marry again, Emma, and if you stay with me, you will be invited to all the best balls, and you will meet all the most eligible men.”
“Ah,” I said again.
She lifted her formidable eyebrows. “And I will be there to scare away the fortune hunters.”
I had to smile at that last comment. The duchess had not been pleased when her favorite grandson married a girl of little standing and no money. But over the two years of my marriage, she and I had come to like each other very much.
“I can always open Charles’s townhouse,” I said. “There’s no need for you to drag yourself to London for my sake, Duchess. I can take care of myself.”
“It’s not Charles’s townhouse any longer, Emma. It’s yours. Everything that was his is yours. That’s why every fortune hunter in town will be after you."
