This revealing moment could have never been foreseen. For years, however, thoughts had materialized in clips, gathering inside the deepest recesses of my mind; but suddenly now they were knitting themselves together in a totally unexpected way, at an equally unexpected moment, and for reasons that I could never quite seem to grasp.
This magic moment for me came on a rather lengthy trip to a special place just outside of Naples, Italy. The general administrative region in which I paused is called Campania. The area that I stood in, however, was somewhat different from the other areas inside this age old province. What set this specific spot apart was that it stood...and still stands... at the base of an ever active volcano, readily discernible in the distance ahead by it's imposing shape. The name of this volcano is Mount Vesuvius. As I paused to catch my breath and take a refreshing smuggled sip of Italy's miglior vino in the heat of the Italian summer, I noticed a small cloud of vapor ease from the summit of Vesuvius. Some ten minutes later this cloud was followed by another release of the same vapor...and on that very moment my mind began to drift.
