~ Prologue ~
“Why does it have to be children?” asked the man in the dark suit. “We’ve been somewhat successful with most of the adult subjects.”
“Because,” said the elderly man in the white lab coat, “children have shown to be more responsive to the implant.” He turned to look out the window of the dimly lit office, a window that overlooked a large laboratory that was obviously very well-funded. “The research indicates that the younger the subject, the easier the integration of the implant.”
“Yes,” said the man in the suit. “But children? My team doesn’t run a day care center. You hired me to find subjects for your research. People who wouldn’t be missed, like homeless, suicidal, junkies.”
“It’s true that we have had a certain degree of success with these subjects," said the elderly man, still looking out the window. “But most of the addicts you brought me have proven to be unreliable, thus causing them to impede my research.” He shook his head disappointedly. “I have to follow my findings wherever they take me, and this research tells me that I need younger subjects.”
“That’s a complete game changer,” said the dark suited man as he shook his head. “It’s not what I signed up for. It’s not the same situation when a child goes missing; law enforcement is much more vigorous, you have frantic parents, and then there’s the whole ‘Amber Alert’ thing.”
The elderly man turned to look at him with a slight impatience in his face. “You have done well for me thus far, but if I have to replace you for the good of the research, then so be it. He turned back to look out the window. "Go and find me some children."
