Sample text:

I decided to write this book so I could lay down some guidelines on teaching self defence, or more specifically, “combatives”. I wanted to lay down an underlying philosophy and some best practices that instructor’s and would-be instructor’s of self defence would hopefully find informative and useful. Students of self defence who have no plans to become teachers will still get a lot out of this book though, for it will provide a means to grade your current training against. It will also offer ideas on how to improve the quality of your self defence training by showing you what you should be aiming to achieve through the training.

The main focus of this book is on combatives, i.e. the physical side of self defence. I have chosen not to concern myself with matters of law, morals, ethics, awareness or any of the other soft skills and theoretical concepts that make up the non-physical side of self defence. There are plenty of other books out there that go into great detail on these matters, so I didn’t see the point of rehashing it all here.

The fact is there are many books out there that concern themselves with the physical side of self defence, but most of the ones that do are way of track when it comes to the matter of what should be taught as self defence and how it should be taught. This is why I wanted to focus on the physical aspects in this book.

This book will not give you all the answers, nor should it. Even though I have created a fairly detailed blueprint here for teaching combatives, you will still have to put the work in and build upon that blueprint.
